Rand McNally Freight is a platform created to reduce the complexities of logistics in commercial transportation.
Rand McNally is one of the oldest geospatial companies in the US. They develop maps, software, and hardware for consumer electronics, commercial transportation, and education.
Currently, the trucking industry runs manually with "middlemen" connecting carriers and drivers to shippers and their loads. Shippers and carriers employ phone calls, texts, emails and *when they're lucky spreadsheets* organizing what needs to go where. For shippers, the process is opaque and manual with a phone call being the closest thing to a status or location check.
On the carrier side, whether a single owner operator or a large fleet, a carrier’s goal is to make the most money. The way carriers make money is their efficiency and ability to scale. Trucks often sit idle and run empty 40% of the time. Drivers are often a cog in the process, making just enough to get by.
Freight offers one place for carriers and drivers to find curated loads based on location, truck set up, and projected earnings. Carriers can easily view each shipment’s details to ensure they can in fact do the job. Once they have reviewed each load, they can place a bid. (… and easily recieve payment upon winning a bid via ACH or T-Checks.
Finding the right carrier at the right price is easy since carriers bid for the job to keep costs competitive. Shippers can also favorite people they've worked with in the past for easy access to people they know will get the job done.
Upon completion of a load, we built an optional rate and review flow so that the community can give valuable input on the process of working together. Whether the project went well or there were roadblocks, we're asking the community to rate and review each other to build trust. In the case of a dispute, on platform moderators will step in to help resolve issues.
Rand McNally came to us with their brand well-documented, so we were able to design within their brand standards with Material Design as a requirement.
Rand McNally gave us access to their wide color palette. We needed to pair these down, so we pulled inspiration from the cross-country journey from industry to nature.
With real-time analytics, shippers can monitor their spend including loads completed and payments made. Carriers and drivers can monitor their output including loads completed, miles driven and payments processing or received. These insights empower Freight's users to optimize their business— staying compliant with hours of service laws and to make more money.
